Podgorica Monuments

Monuments in Podgorica reflect the city's layered political history. The Independence Monument on Slobode Avenue marks the 2006 referendum vote that re-established Montenegro as a sovereign state. The Vladimir Vysotsky statue at the Morača river bend, installed in 2004, commemorates the Russian poet and singer's 1972 visit and his subsequent poem about Montenegro. The King Nikola monument on the river path honours the late-nineteenth-century king under whom the modern city's grid was laid out.

A scatter of partisan war memorials across the centre, Park Petrovica and the residential blocks date from the 1944-1955 stretch when the city was reconstructed after the Allied bombing. Most monuments carry trilingual plaques in Montenegrin, English and Russian. Photography is permitted at all sites. The Vysotsky statue, the Independence Monument and the King Nikola monument can be walked in a single half-hour route across the centre and the Moraca.
