Local sources name Mehmed as a possible Ottoman-period builder, and the structure remained the principal crossing here for centuries.

After the Second World War the bridge was reconstructed and concreted, levelling the deck and removing most of the original masonry. It was renamed in honour of Vako Đurović, a partisan fighter from the area killed during the war. The crossing remains a waypoint between the old town and the riverbank.
